The Hillsborough County School Board is responsible for making policy decisions and overseeing a total budget of $2.9 billion. This budget makes Hillsborough County the 8th largest school district in the nation! Additionally, the School Board is the county’s largest employer with more than 26,000 employees.
Alicia Toler looks to unseat incumbent Cindy Stuart in District 3. Stuart presently serves as Vice-Chair of the School Board. She was first elected to the board in 2012. She represents the School Board on the Glazer Children’s Museum, SERVE, and is an alternate on the Florida School Boards Association Board of Directors, Hillsborough Education Foundation, Juvenile Justice Board, Circuit 13; and the Value Adjustment Board.
District 7 candidates are all vying to replace Carol Kurdell. Ms. Kurdell is not seeking
reelection. Ms. Kurdell was elected to the School Board (District 7, countywide) in 1992, and has served six terms. Mrs. Kurdell served as School Board chair in 1997, 2003, 2009, and 2014; and vice chair in 1996, 2002, 2008, and 2013. She is a Tampa native and a product of Hillsborough County Public Schools. She has served as president of the Hillsborough County Parent-Teacher Association and has a wide range of civic involvement. She holds membership in the Tampa Woman’s Club, The Italian Club, West Tampa Chamber of Commerce, and Ybor City Rotary Club.
