The Hillsborough County School Board is responsible for making policy decisions and overseeing a total budget of $2.9 billion. This budget makes Hillsborough County the 8th largest school district in the nation! Additionally, the School Board is the county’s largest employer with more than 26,000 employees.
District 1 is presently represented by Susan Valdes, who was elected to the Hillsborough County School Board (District 1) in November, 2004, and was re-elected in August 2008 and in November, 2012. Mrs. Valdes became School Board Chair on November 17, 2009, and again on November 18, 2014, after serving as Vice Chair in 2009 and respectively in 2013.
She is being challenged by William Person, an Air Force veteran, who retired in 2011 after 35 years with the school district. He was an English teacher, human resources specialist, assistant principal and principal at both the junior high school and high school level and held district positions as director of pupil administration and general director of administration.
District 5 is presently represented by Doretha Edgecomb, who was elected to the School Board in
2004, and reelected in 2008 and 2012. Ms. Edgecomb served as chair of the School Board in 2011, after serving as vice chair in 2010. Ms. Edgecomb is not seeking re-election.
Candidates vying for her open seat are Joseph Jordan-Robinson, Jr., Lynette Judge, Jacqueline Leeks, Tarance LeNoir, and Tamara Shamburger.
