The League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County, in partnership with the Tiger Bay Club of Tampa, will present a panel discussion on juvenile justice in our county. The League of Women Voters of Florida has established a committee to study and inform the public about needed reforms in our juvenile justice system.
As part of that effort, we will present a discussion between Julianne M. Holt, Public Defender, Hillsborough County, 13th Judicial Circuit, and newly-elected Andrew H. Warren, Hillsborough County State Attorney, 13th Judicial Circuit, about measures and practices that can ease the undue involvement of young people in the criminal justice system.
A particular focus will be on the increasing use of civil citations in lieu of arrests for misdemeanors committed by juveniles. A bill that has been filed (SB 196 by Sen. Anitere Flores) to make this practice mandatory for first-time offenses will be considered by the Legislature this term.
The other main priority of the LWVF Juvenile Justice Committee involves reducing the number of juveniles who are tried in adult court and sent to adult prisons.
