The State Attorney is an official who is elected every four years. The office is responsible for prosecuting criminals throughout Hillsborough County. The staff of approximately 352 includes more than 120 attorneys, 12 investigators and a dedicated support staff.
Mark Ober
Mark Ober, a Republican, is the current State Attorney. Mr. Ober was elected Hillsborough County State Attorney in November 2000 and re-elected in August 2004. He was again elected, without opposition, for the terms beginning January 2009 and January 2013.
He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from the University of Florida in 1973. Mark earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the South Texas College of Law and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1977, when he began a career as an assistant state attorney. In that capacity, he worked his way through the ranks to become Felony Bureau Chief, Chief of Major Crimes Division, Chief of Career Criminal Division, and Senior Litigation Specialist.
Mark entered private practice in 1987 and specialized in criminal defense law until being elected Hillsborough County State Attorney. He is recognized in the legal community as an expert in the field of criminal law, having personally chaired over 250 criminal jury trials. Mark has handled over forty first degree murder cases. Andrew Warren
Serving with the United States Department of Justice for nearly a decade, Andrew Warren has been a lead federal prosecutor in tackling complex white collar crime and corruption, including investment schemes and Medicare fraud. With the Justice Department, Andrew successfully prosecuted Robert Allen Stanford and other executives at Stanford Financial Group for orchestrating one of the largest frauds in history, a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, among other high-profile white-collar investigations. His successful prosecutions earned him accolades, including the 2013 Attorney General Award for Trial Litigation. Andrew has served on panels across the United States and abroad, lecturing on investigating and prosecuting complex crime, as well as instructing for the Justice Department’s South Carolina-based National Training Center.
Andrew graduated with honors from Columbia University Law School. As an undergraduate, he attended Brandeis University, graduating magna cum laude with a double-major in Economics and Political Science. While in college, he spent a year studying at the London School of Economics and served as captain of the rugby team and president of his fraternity. He lives in Tampa with his wife and two daughters. He is a member of the Hillsborough County Bar and Federal Bar Associations, Congregation Schaarai Zedek, and the Gold Shield Foundation, an organization that supports the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who die in the line of duty.
