Sandy has dedicated more than 40 years to serving the Hillsborough County community, including a decade as Hillsborough County Commissioner for District 1 (2010–2020), where she was twice elected by her colleagues as Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. Before joining the Commission, she served eight years in the Florida House of Representatives, becoming the first Republican woman to serve as Speaker Pro Tempore. Throughout her public service, Sandy championed economic development, transportation, workforce development, children’s services, mental health and substance abuse treatment, homelessness, opioid prevention, and human trafficking awareness. She also led efforts to strengthen early childhood education, improve nursing home care, expand hospital funding, and establish workforce development boards across Florida.

In addition to her elected service, Sandy has held leadership roles with CareerSource Tampa Bay and has been recognized by more than 30 organizations for her commitment to children, families, education, and community service. She helped found the Pace Center for Girls in Tampa Bay, spearheaded the campaign to build the Glazer Children’s Museum, and has supported organizations including Junior Achievement, Starting Right Now, Phoenix House, the Centre for Women, the Tampa Museum of Art, and Children’s Home Network, where she also serves as a Guardian ad Litem. Prior to public office, Sandy worked for a Fortune 500 company.

Les has devoted more than 50 years to public service, including a decade representing District 3 on the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners (2010–2020), where he served three terms as Chairman. Before joining the County Commission, he represented Hillsborough, Manatee, and Pinellas counties in the Florida Senate from 2000 to 2006, serving as Democratic Leader, Democratic Leader Pro Tempore, Democratic Whip, and Vice Chair of the Ways and Means Committee, where he co-authored two state budgets. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives, becoming the first person in Florida history to serve as Democratic Leader in both legislative chambers. Throughout his career, Les built a reputation for bipartisan leadership and advancing policies that strengthened education, healthcare, services for seniors, and economic opportunity. He also served on the Tampa City Council.

A lifelong Hillsborough County resident, Les is a U.S. Air Force veteran and a graduate of the University of South Florida, where he later served as Interim Associate Vice President and Dean of Students. He has remained active in civic and community leadership throughout his career and has been recognized for his contributions to public service, including receiving an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Florida A&M University. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Deacons at New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
